Day 8 Post Op - First Morning Outside, Wheelchair Transfers, Sleep Struggles & Pain Updates

Day 8 Post Op

Navigating the park on a wheelchair

Day 8 post‑op came with a mix of progress, discomfort, and a much‑needed moment outdoors. This morning, my husband took me to the park; my first time outside since surgery, and even though it was a short trip, it felt like a huge milestone in my ankle surgery recovery journey.

Learning Patience With Wheelchair Transfers

Getting from the house to the car is a whole process right now. Setting up the wheelchair, transferring from the walker to the wheelchair, then from the wheelchair to the car (and doing it all again in reverse) requires patience I’m still learning.
I used to move quickly and independently, so slowing down this much is testing me in ways I didn’t expect. But this is part of post‑op mobility recovery, and I’m trying to honor the pace my body needs.

A Short Drive, Nausea, and a Much‑Needed Breath of Fresh Air

The drive to the park was only ten minutes, but I felt nauseous the whole way — something I didn’t expect this far into recovery.
Still, once we arrived, the fresh air made everything worth it. The weather was perfect, the breeze was gentle, and the sound of the brook flowing with birds chirping felt grounding. After days of being indoors, simply sitting outside reminded me how healing nature can be during post‑operative recovery.

I’m incredibly grateful to my husband for taking the time and effort to get me out of the house today. These small moments matter.

Sleep Issues: Trying to Rest With an Elevated Leg

For the past three nights, I’ve been falling asleep around 2 a.m. Sleeping after ankle surgery has been one of the hardest parts of recovery.
Keeping my left leg elevated for hours becomes uncomfortable, and my body feels stuck in the same position. I’ve started worrying about pressure on my back because movement in bed is so limited. Finding a comfortable position feels impossible, and the lack of sleep is catching up to me.

If you’re reading this because you’re researching how to sleep after ankle surgery, just know you’re not alone — this part is tough.

A Scary Moment: Twisting My Ankle During Transfer

While transferring from the car to the wheelchair, I accidentally twisted my ankle slightly. The pain shot up to an 8/10, and it honestly scared me.
I took Tylenol, and thankfully the pain went down to a 4/10, but it was a reminder that healing is fragile and even small movements can feel huge during post‑op week 1 recovery.

Finding Joy in Small Wins

Despite the discomfort, the nausea, the sleep issues, and the pain flare‑up, today still felt meaningful. Being outside, hearing the water, feeling the sun, and reconnecting with the world reminded me that recovery isn’t just physical — it’s emotional too.

Today was a small win. And right now, small wins are everything.
